The Brazilian soccer legend, Pelé, passed away at the age of 82

He had won three World Cups and was the first global icon of the sport.

Pelé, real name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento

For over 60 years, Pelé has been a household name in the world of soccer.

Pele was born in 1940 in the city of Três Corações, located about 155 miles northwest of Rio de Janeiro.

He first gained international recognition in 1958 at the age of 17 when he played in his first World Cup. 

During that tournament, he scored Brazil's only goal in the quarterfinal against Wales, followed by a hat-trick in the semifinal against France and two goals in the final against Sweden.

He was named the Athlete of the Century by the IOC (International Olympic Committee)

Pele was also awarded as Player of the Century by the IFFHS (International Federation of Football History and Statistics).
